Tim and Mandy had been going out for almost a decade. They were both in their 40's and were thinking about getting married. So far, they had been in a dating free relationship. This wasn't for any particular reason - more because when they were both always too tired after work to go out for a meal, and their weekends were taken up entertaining their 2 young children. They had delayed getting married due to the cost of the event, but now they both felt that getting married was the right thing to do. Privately, Mandy was fed up of being in a dating free relationship, and longed to be taken on a proper date like a teenager. She never told this to Tim, as she was scared it would upset him. As she was sitting at the kitchen table thinking about this, Tim was sitting on the sofa thinking a similar thing. "I must take Mandy out on a date soon" he thought to himself, "She will never want to marry me if she thinks we will stay in a dating free relationship for ever!". He got up, and went to the kitchen for a drink. He found Mandy sitting at the table. "Hello darling" he said, kissing her cheek "are you alright?" Mandy blinked at him, smiled and said "yes, I was just thinking". As she watched Tim pouring his coffee, Mandy wondered if she should mention about her date thoughts to him. As Tim poured his coffee, he wondered if he should mention his date thoughts to her. He decided against it. He chickened out. "Its hard after all these years" he thought to himself "to suggest something new. She might not even like the idea - she might think its childish!" Mandy watched Tim leave the room, and sighed. A few weeks went by, and each person's thoughts were constantly taken up with wondering what the other would think about going on a date. One day, Tim picked Mandy up from work. He didn't normally do this, but he had been in the area and decided to surprise her. On the way home they took a detour. They stopped at one of the poshest restaurants in town. Mandy, thinking they were just in a traffic jam didn't notice, until Tim opened her door for her and held out his hand like a chauffeur to help her out.Twenty minutes later they were seated in the restaurant ata table for two. The restaurant wasover-looking the river Thames, and the view from the window was beautiful in the fading light.Mandy couldn't believe it, and told Tim so. Tim grinned, and did something even more unbelievable. He got down on one knee, and asked Mandy to be his wife. OnMandy's face was a look of complete shock, happiness and delightas she accepted his proposal. Fiveminutes later Tim gazed at her face softly lighted by candle light, "You are absolutely stunning darling" he told her as hetook her hand. "Here's to the end of our dating free relationship!" he announced, toasting his new fiance.
